Versailles-Midway-Woodford County Human Rights Commission (HRC)

June 6 , 2019 Minutes

Regular Meeting Midway City Hall 6:30 P.M.

Present: Jorge Espinoza, Kyle Fannin, Mary Nehring, Daniel Brown, Darlene Jackson

Guest(s): Cindy Batts

Absent: Tim Middleton, Mary Raglin

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 P.M. by Vice Chair Nehring.

Approval of the Agenda: Brown and Fannin made motions to approve the agenda and motion passed.

Approval of April, 2019 Minutes: Minutes were not available.

Treasurer’s Report : HRC $1,514.42

Imagination Library $3231.58

Brown noted the need to contact Mayor Traugott for an appointment to finish Bruce Batman’s term (1/1/18 – 12/31/20) as well as to check if Elizabeth Turley has been appointed. Nehring requested a new roster with contact information.

Old Business:

Debit Card/Web Site and Email Account Bills: Fannin will attempt to secure a debit card in order to pay website, email, and other account bills. Brown noted that Mary Raglin has been trained in checking HRC email and updating website information.

By-Law Amendment to Include Electronic Attendance: Brown suggested a revision to the draft revised by-laws. P.M. needs to be added to meeting time. The Commission agreed. Nehring and Fannin made motions to approve the amended by-laws with one slight revision. The newly approved by-laws include corrected attendance requirements and electronic attendance. Motion passed.

Woodford County High School Liaisons to the Human Rights Commission: Fannin will attempt to find a Liaison when school starts up. Meanwhile, it was discussed that a Commissioner appointment of a younger person to replace Bruce Batman would be welcomed. Nehring and Fannin volunteered to explore a younger individual who might be interested.

Woodford County High School African American Reading Scores: Middleton was not present to discuss. Brown also brought forth a continuing concern of how to strengthen the Woodford County Schools connection since the majority of complaints have come from within the local schools. After some discussion, it was decided to reach out to school counselors.

2019 Twilight Festival on August 24, 2019, 3:00 – 9:00 PM: Brown presented a draft brochure highlighting information about the Versailles-Midway-Woodford County Human Rights Commission. Several corrections and revisions were suggested. Brown will make such revisions and send a copy to Fannin in order to secure some bids for printing. At the upcoming August meeting, the HRC will discuss and secure printing for the upcoming Twilight Festival.

Midway 2019 Yearly Event/HRC Information Distribution: After some discussion, the Commission decided to investigate attendance at the Midway July 27 event in order to distribute HRC information.

Woodford Sun Article: Fannin invited the Woodford Sun reporter(s) to attend the June meeting. However, there was not attendance.

Funding Request from Versailles, Midway, and Woodford County: Fannin has notified Versailles, Midway, and Woodford County governments.

Scholarship Coordinator: Brown asked for clarification. Jackson will serve as scholarship coordinator and Middleton volunteered to help at the June HRC monthly meeting.
