The regular bi-monthly meeting of the Versailles-Midway-Woodford County Human Rights Commission, held on 10/6/2022, was called to order at 6:46 pm by Commission Chairperson Tim Middleton.
Commission members present: Cindy Batts, Kyle Fannin, Tim Middleton, Chris Wright, Elizabeth Turley, Jorge Espinoza, and Joann Muir
Commission members absent: Cierra Spalding
Opened with prayer
Comments/Questions from members of the public: none
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Motion was made by Libby, and seconded by Joann, for the approval of the minutes of the 8/4/22 meeting as presented. Motion passed.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Report was distributed by treasurer Kyle Fannin. There is a balance in the checking account of $4,590.29. The money for the Imagination Library ($2,520) was sent to the Friends of the Library to start the program as soon as they can.
We have received the money promised from all three governing bodies at this time. It was discussed that Midway gives us $500 a year, but Versailles only gives us $200. Will talk with Versailles to see if there is a possibility of increasing their investment to at least $500 as they are larger than Midway.
Motion was made by Cindy and seconded by Chris to accept the treasurer’s report as presented. Motion passed.
Motion was made by Chris and seconded by Kyle to reimburse Tim for the books that were given out at the Twilight Festival, the motion passed unanimously.
OLD BUSINESS:
Recap of the Twilight Festival in Versailles: the books did very well at this event. Discussed making Human Rights Commission information more prominent at the booth next time (information was put in the books toward the end of the event, but not at the beginning). Also talked about doing some adult books next time. All comments that were heard were positive (especially about the bi-lingual books). Several people asked about making donations to the Commission for this project. It is unsure if we are allowed to do this. We will ask the three governing entities about this.
Discussed possible replacement for our vacancy. Tim will contact one of these to ask about serving.
NEW BUSINESS:
Discussed the black history initiatives that are being sponsored by Huntertown. We are considering helping with this if possible/needed.
Will take a photo as a group soon to put a story in the Woodford Sun about the Commission and about the books.
NEXT MEETING: Thursday December 1st at the MUST building
Motion for adjournment was made by Libby and seconded by Kyle. Motion passed.
Addendum: Pictures were taken on 10/16/22 at which time Cierra tendered her resignation.
Respectfully submitted,
Cindy Batts
Secretary
